laying a lawn
How to lay a perfect lawn in 5 steps:
Laying a lawn: step 1
Prevent bumps and bulges in the lawn by levelling the subsoil and removing any irregularities. In the event of heavy weed and unevenness, spade first. Subsequently, level out the soil with a rake and press down using a roller.
Laying a lawn: step 2
Once the subsoil is completely level and evenly pressed (this prevents subsequent ‘sagging’ of the turf), it needs to be fertilized. To this end, use a balanced mixture of Nitrogen, Phosphor and Potassium (NPK); use 3 to 4 kg per 100m2. Rake the granules through a few centimetres of soil so that the young roots cannot burn. Press or roll the soil once more and rake the top layer up to a centimetre deep. After having slightly wet the soil, roll out the turfs. Ensure the turfs are laid to form a neat whole and cover any openings with soil to prevent dehydration.
Laying a lawn: step 3
Once you have rolled out the turfs and the desired surface area is covered, firmly press or roll the entire field. In order to ensure proper attachment, sprinkle regularly and generously (between 15 and 20mm per sprinkling exercise).
The first few weeks are vital in terms of lawn appearance and quality. In any case, do not scatter any fertilizer in the first two weeks.
Laying a lawn: step 4
After two to three weeks, the root system of the lawn will have attached to the soil. Be conservative with watering and the roots will anchor even deeper. Chances of the lawn becoming dehydrated are minimal now. Depending on the time of year, you can gently mow the grass after only one week. Ensure you use a machine that is adjusted to the correct height and has sharp blades.
Laying a lawn: step 5
If you minimise treading the grass in the first month and fertilize it with a maximum of 1 to 2 kg of nitrogen granules per 100 m2, the lawn will be ready for use. You have now finished laying a lawn in five steps and it is waiting to be enjoyed to the full.
General tips
After having purchased the turfs, do not expose them to the sun whilst rolled up. If you are unable to use them within 24 hours, roll out the turfs and keep them moist. Regularly mowing and fertilizing your lawn is important for the long-term upkeep and prevents weeds and diseases from developing.
